Sir Jacob Epstein, born in 1880 in New York City, was a pioneering sculptor known for his innovative and controversial work. Raised in a Jewish immigrant family, Epstein showed an early talent for art and received formal training at the Art Students League of New York. In 1902, he moved to Europe, settling in London, where he would spend much of his life.

Epstein's early sculptures were characterised by their expressive and dynamic forms, often pushing the boundaries of traditional figurative art. His work drew inspiration from a diverse range of influences, including ancient Egyptian sculpture, African tribal art, and the avant-garde movements of his time.

Throughout his career, Epstein produced numerous public commissions and private commissions, earning both praise and criticism for his bold and unconventional style. One of his most famous works is the controversial "Tomb of Oscar Wilde" in Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, which was met with outrage and vandalism upon its unveiling in 1914.
